Since completing my education in the U.K. I’ve trained and/or worked as an aerobic instructor, an inflight-translator, a symphonic and operatic conductor, a yoga teacher, an Ayurveda consultant, a University Professor, and now… a content creator. These paths weren’t connected or consecutive, but they all became parts of my life experience because they were things I was curious about and decided to pursue. I’ve found that when I take a few minutes to let my curiosity flow, I thrive on its renewable energy and 8 Minute Idea is my way of sharing it with you!
So take a listen! You might just stumble upon something that’ll help you work, play, or feel better.
I had the immeasurable honor of becoming a first-time Grammy Winner last Sunday! 😄
@hougrandopera put together an all-star cast to bring Intelligence, an operatic thriller by the masterful Jake Heggie @jakeheggiemusic and @gene.scheer to vivid life, and I was honored to conduct both the World Premiere and the recording by @soundmirror_inc.
The Recording Academy recognized our work with the Grammy Award for Best Opera Recording at the 68th Annual Awards Ceremony and I couldn`t be happier for the entire team!🎉
I want to thank the terrific Orchestra of @hougrandopera, for doing full and complete justice to Jake`s gripping score while working with me to shape the storytelling and sound painting into a moving experience for our audiences.
A special shoutout to the wonderful Jamie Barton @jbartonmezzo who sadly couldn`t join us on stage but like me, won her first Grammy. Congratulations Jamie!🎉
It was privilege and a pleasure to share the Grammy stage with the fabulous Janai Brugger and J`Nai Bridges who both brought so much heart and heat to their complex roles as daughter and mother, and to spend time with the legendary Blanton Alspaugh who, until Sunday night was "The Engineer" I ran into briefly after performances or whose disembodied voice I heard giving feedback on takes. I now know that Genius apparently does come in very friendly packages...😊
Words cannot adequately express my admiration for Mike Mayes @mazerthehazer, Nicholas Newton @nichonewt, @joshuabluetenor, @caitlin.lynch.detroit, who all created three dimensional characters audiences really cared about.
Finally thanks to the dynamic @jawolezollar and @vtdancecompany for wonderful collaboration in the rehearsal room and to Urban Bushwomen for the energy and inspiration they shared with me on stage. I loved working with you all!
So many things had to align miraculously for this award to come our way my friends, and in your persons, they did! Congratulations to @hougrandopera for this firework of a first release on their in-house label and heartfelt thanks to Jake in particular for including me in the experience of making this once-in-a-lifetime creative journey a reality!❤️ #grammys
Taking a Xmas breather in Trinidad and we decided to spend the morning at the stunning Maracas Bay on the north coast. The weather and the water were absolutely perfect! 😎🌞🌊 🎄👌🏾
Thrilled to make my debut at the Metropolitan Opera NY tomorrow with The Gershwin`s Porgy and Bess! Time to send it! 😊
Gorgeous weather in South Germany today! Nothing like working outdoors while pretending to still be on holiday! 😊
Had an amazing time touring with @nationalyouthorchestrawales! This was my second NYOW course, following Scheherezade which we toured just after lock down ended in 2022. This time it was all-American: Bernstein, Barber Gershwin, Bates and Wang Jie and the musicians and staff were just awesome. I couldn`t be more grateful! 😊
So happy to be back in my beloved Black Forest metropolis after 2 months on the road! Incredibly restorative and refreshing. 😊
Thrilled to have been on the jury for the International Conducting Competition Rotterdam! Rob, Leana and the whole team at @conducting_rotterdam were wonderful hosts and I really appreciated the opportunity to support fresh young podium talent and share quality time with colleagues. Also enjoyed hearing @rotterdamphilharmonic again so soon following our exciting performances earlier this year!
After 2 months of score study, 4 weeks of rehearsal and 10 performances in 8 days, Porgy and Bess at the @kennedycenter , Washington DC, is now a cherished memory! Heartfelt thanks to `Cesca Zambello, Tim O`Leary, our amazing casts and chorus as well as the entire crew at @washnatopera for making me feel so supported and happy during our whirlwind production marathon! Can`t wait for Aida in just a few months! 😊
Enjoying the final hours of an incredible seven week stint in the Netherlands which concluded today with our last performance of the mind-blowing "The First People" as presented by @nationaleoperaballet in Amsterdam.
Sooo grateful to have collaborated with my incredible cast - @kyleketelsen, @leighmelrose, @johnosborntenor and Annette Dasch, the wonderful music staff and crew at DNO and the superb @rotterdamphilharmonic on this journey. Can`t wait to work with you all again! Also thrilled to have met up with my beautiful niece Julian and her partner as well as my old partner in crime Bernhard and his husband while here in Amsterdam. Now it`s (finally) time to head home for a while! 😊
My final post of 2024 is from enchanting Amsterdam where I spent a lovely Christmas before starting rehearsals at the wonderful Dutch National Opera. Wishing everyone an enjoyable New Year`s Eve! 😊
Loved the Christmas Market this year, but boy was it cold! ❄️ 🌨️ ☃️ Perfect excuse to warm up with Glühwein (mulled wine) followed by crêpes with Nutella and banana - let`s goooo! 😋
I`m so happy to have just completed my third run of The Time of Our Singing, Kris Defoort`s groundbreaking opera based on the novel by Richard Powers. Named World Premiere of the Year at the 2021 Opera Awards, this beautiful work that melds classical music, jazz, rock, pop, rap and an equally diverse (and gorgeous) cast played to sold out audiences who were moved by its message: All music belongs to everyone. "Nobody owns it!" It was a blast! 😊
