After a three-year-plus journey from the first workshop rehearsal in March 2018 in Philadelphia to the Premiere in Brussels on September 14, 2021, The Time of Our Singing, Kris Defoort’s operatic exploration of cultural identity and the music that expresses it, finally wrapped up on September 26, 2021.
Based on the celebrated novel by Richard Powers, TOOS (as the production nicknamed it) was an absolute joy from beginning to end, not least of all because of the incredibly moving story, but also thanks to Kris Defoort’s eclectic score, our wonderful international cast and the beautiful direction by Ted Huffman. La Monnaie is a house I have loved since the earliest stages of my career, and it was great to be back!
I already know that this is just the beginning of my journey with this profound work, and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here. I wrote an article about my experience with the piece itself, but also of growing up with a “mixed” cultural identity in the Caribbean, a similar journey to the one the opera’s protagonists illustrate. You can read the article, called Mixedness – Unified in Time here
To put what I’ve written in context, you may want to check out the trailer below:

I’ll share information about what’s next on my journey with The Time of Our Singing very soon.
