After six weeks of rehearsals with Theater St. Gallen, tonight I’m conducting the Swiss Premiere of Kris De Foort‘s wonderful new opera The Time of Our Singing, based on the novel by Richard Powers. This is the first revival of Ted Huffman‘s original production for La Monnaie, Brussels which received the International Opera Award for World Premiere of the Year 2021.
I’ve really enjoyed revisiting this beautiful score with a partially new cast and a superb Swiss Jazz Quartet embedded within the excellent Sinfonieorchester St. Gallen. It’s not very often that one gets to return to a contemporary opera so soon after the world premiere and the whole experience has been a pleasure – except for the rehearsal where I accidentally fell off the darkened theatre stage into the auditorium… 🫣😬
This is the last engagement of my 2023 Winter tour which started in early January with two concerts in the U.S., followed by three in Germany, then three more back in the U.S., culminating in tonight’s premiere here in Switzerland, all within eight weeks!
Tonight should be a blast, then it’s going to be time to put my feet up for a while. Can’t wait on both scores!
